Peshtemals; the ageless lines of classic
A peshtemal is a woven cloth used to cover the body in a hammam or bath, or wrapped around the waist to prevent contamination of clothing while working. The peshtemal is also a traditional Turkish towel. The peshtemal has survived to the present day from the historical Turkish bath period. The Turkish towel has a history of about six hundred years in Anatolia. In some cultures, almost identical products have different names such as sarong, kikoy, kangas, shukas or fouta. Sarong or sarung is a name given in Asia. Kikoy or kikoi is used in East Africa. Kangas or kanga is the same as used in Africa. Shukas is used in Africa. Fouta is generally used in the Mediterranean region. Finally, the same tradition has different names depending on the region.
